LAS VEGAS – Today, Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03) announced a new $2.1 million federal investment she secured for Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada (CCSN)’s low-income housing renovations, including a new elevator for residents with mobility issues like seniors and individuals with disabilities, as well as significant food pantry upgrades. CCSN’s St. Vincent Apartments will receive over $1.3 million, and their Hands of Hope Community Food Pantry will receive $850,000.

St. Vincent Apartments was completed 25 years ago and provides 120 units of affordable housing for low-income individuals. Without an elevator, the first floor of St. Vincent Apartments is only available to individuals with mobility issues. The waitlist for housing seniors and those who with disabilities is far longer compared to those without mobility issues. The food pantry was completed in 2016 and serves about 150 families each day, but no upgrades have been made other than paint.

In southern Nevada, more than 6,000 individuals experience homelessness on any given night and more than 274,000 individuals continue to face hunger, which includes nearly 94,000 children.

Congresswoman Lee presented Deacon Roberts with a $2,166,279 check that includes:

  • $1,316,279 for renovating the St. Vincent Apartments, including adding a brand-new elevator to this multi-story complex that houses seniors and individuals with disabilities. It will also help staff better serve residents.

  • $850,000 for the Hands of Hope Community Food Pantry to invest in new shelving, new appliances, and increased capacity that will deliver cost savings, increase the quality of food, and help serve more families.

“No one should have to worry about how to keep a roof over their head or where their next meal is coming from. Thankfully, today’s new investment will help Catholic Charities directly address these issues,” said Congresswoman Lee. “As southern Nevada’s voice on the House Appropriations Committee, and by working closely with Catholic Charities, I knew we needed to do more to strengthen these life-saving services. That’s why I got to work and secured federal investments to strengthen affordable housing and tackle food insecurity.”

“State funds granted to our housing and food services arrive at a critical juncture, addressing the pressing needs of our vulnerable clients,” said Deacon Tom Roberts, CEO of CCSN. “This is particularly crucial as grocery inflation and housing costs escalate in Southern Nevada. We express profound gratitude for the generous appropriations, as they enable us to maintain direct housing for 120 low-income men and women at St. Vincent Apartments, while also sustaining no-cost food supplementation for thousands through our Hands of Hope Community Food Pantry.”

Congresswoman Lee was joined by CEO of Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada Deacon Tom Roberts.
