Congresswoman Lee Refuses to Accept Pay Until Congressional Republicans End Their Government Shutdown
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03) announced she would refuse to accept a paycheck until Republicans in Washington end their government shutdown. In an attempt to rip health care away from 15 million Americans, Republicans failed to pass a bipartisan government funding deal, causing the federal government to shut down.
Congresswoman Lee sent a letter to the Chief Administrative Officer of the United States House of Representatives, Catherine Szpindor, asking for her salary to be withheld for the duration of the shutdown.
“While the federal government continues to experience a shutdown, I respectfully request that you withhold my congressional salary. Members of Congress should play by the same rules as the people they represent. Until Congress comes to a bipartisan resolution to this impasse and fully reopens the government, I firmly believe Member pay should be withheld,” wrote Congresswoman Lee.
Congresswoman Lee continued, “Washington’s dysfunction is unacceptable, and Nevadans have had enough. I continue to urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to come to the table to end this shutdown, and I will refuse to accept a paycheck until this shutdown is resolved.”
The full letter is available here.
Congresswoman Lee has continued to sound the alarm on the health care crisis facing Nevada since Republicans in Washington took away tax credits that 30,000 southern Nevadans depend on to afford their health insurance. Without these credits, costs for families could rise by nearly 200%.
