Congresswoman Lee Sworn-In to Third Term Representing Southern Nevada

January 7, 2023

WASHINGTON – Today, after House Republicans failed to elect a speaker for the first four scheduled days of this 118th Congress, Congresswoman Susie Lee was officially sworn-in to represent Nevada's Third Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives for a third consecutive term.

"I am honored that Nevadans have entrusted me to serve this district for a third term," said Congresswoman Lee. "Over the past four years, I've made it clear that I'll work with anyone, Democrat or Republican, to get the job done for Nevada. That's the very same mindset I'm bringing to this Congress.

"The past four days have made it crystal clear that common-sense leadership is needed now more than ever. I know my place in this House, I know my common-sense colleagues across the aisle, and I know the path to getting things done this term - it's working together for our constituents and not against our political opponents. The career politicians in the headlines this week just made that abundantly clear.

"Over the past two years under Democratic control of both chambers, we brought both parties together to pass laws that will rebuild our crumbling infrastructure, make our communities safer, and invest in strong American manufacturing. I'm fighting to keep the focus on what unites us during this period of ‘divided' government. I believe we can come together to lower costs, expand access to affordable health care, and build an economy that works for every American family."

Early Saturday morning, House Republicans were finally able to negotiate within their party to elect a speaker. The final vote followed fourteen unsuccessful attempts to elect a speaker, one of only two instances requiring multiple ballots in modern U.S. history. As a result, members of the House were unable to be sworn-in and begin the legislative process, delaying all votes, hearings, committee work, and threatening members' ability to assist constituents with federal agencies.

Congresswoman Lee was first elected to represent Nevada's Third Congressional District in 2018. Prior to her time representing this district, Congresswoman Lee worked to improve Nevada's public schools, decrease school dropout rates, and provide after-school programming for students in need. In the House, Congresswoman Lee has been a member of the Appropriations, Veterans' Affairs, and Education and Labor Committees, and serves alongside her Democratic and Republican colleagues as a member of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus.
