KSNV: Congresswoman Lee addresses senior scam concerns amid Social Security changes

April 11, 2025

Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03) hosted a scam prevention presentation at the West Flamingo Senior Center to safeguard southern Nevada seniors from financial scams.

The event, which included issue experts and law enforcement, comes as changes and cuts to the Social Security Administration (SSA) raise concerns.

Nevada leads the nation in financial fraud per capita, and with the closure of a Las Vegas Social Security office, scammers have found new opportunities.

In 2024, older adults lost a record $12.5 billion to scams and fraud, a 25 percent increase from $10 billion in 2023.

Over 480,000 Nevada seniors rely on Social Security.

"Unfortunately, our seniors are often the top targets of scams designed to rob them of their hard-earned savings," said Congresswoman Lee. "And it doesn’t help when this Administration has created a lot of confusion, chaos, and uncertainty surrounding Social Security."

Lee emphasized the need for resources to protect seniors, stating, "These reckless changes have made it be easier to scare seniors by suggesting that their benefits are going to be misplaced, mishandled or interrupted."

Joining Congresswoman Lee were Nevada Legal Services Director of Litigation Susan Myers, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Spring Valley Area Command Sergeant Mark Pretti, and Southern Nevada Senior Law Program Director William O. Voy, Esq.
