Health Care
When my father was 56, he lost his job and my parents were unable to afford health insurance. Then, one month before my mother qualified for Medicare, she suffered a major heart attack. We almost lost our home trying to pay off the hospital bills.
I know what it’s like to struggle without access to medical care because I lived it while growing up in a working-class family of ten, and I know every American has a story like mine. In Congress, I’m fighting to keep families healthy and ensure access to high-quality care — no matter where you live — at the lowest possible cost.
Holding Big Pharma Accountable
Last Congress, I stood up to Big Pharma and passed legislation to lower costs for seniors by capping the cost of insulin at $35 a month, capping out of pocket costs at $2,000 a year, and lowering prescription drug prices across the board. Now, I’m continuing that fight to lower costs and make drug prices more transparent so families can make better decisions and see their lower costs in real time.
Expanding Telehealth and Rural Health Care Access
For too many people who live in underserved and rural areas, it is difficult to physically get to a doctor's office. But with the enactment of my MOBILE Health Care Act, Federally Qualified Health Centers can now acquire and dispatch more mobile clinics, which will help bring essential health care to people where they are. I’m continuing this work toward more accessible care by making sure telehealth specialists can reach every community across southern Nevada.
Providing Mental Health Resources
Whether you’re a student struggling in school or a veteran transitioning back to civilian life, I’m fighting to get folks the resources and care they need. My bipartisan TREAT Youth Act would protect and support youth and families struggling with substance abuse by reauthorizing a program to improve youth awareness of risks associated with fentanyl and opioids, increase access to relevant medications, and train health care providers on best practices for supporting youth suffering from substance abuse. I also helped craft and get signed into law the COMPACT Act, which helped the VA get emergency suicide prevention care to 50,000 veterans in just the first year of it’s implementation. And finally, my bipartisan COMPLETE Care Act addresses our nation’s mental health crisis by incentivizing primary care providers to integrate behavioral health within their practices. That means combining the expertise of primary care physicians, psychiatric consultants, and care managers to work together and improve patient outcomes.
Combating our Dire Provider Shortage
The time is now to invest in educational and training pipelines to make sure we are able to train enough health care professionals to fill our dire provider shortage and ensure we have quality health care delivery in the future. My bipartisan Train More Nurses Act sets best practices for making sure that every dollar is going as far as it can in improving nursing career pathways, supporting our nursing schools, and building a health workforce that provides better health care outcomes for all Nevadans.
