Women's Rights
I was first elected to Congress alongside a historic wave of female lawmakers across the country. Today, I’m honoring that history by continuing to fight for our most fundamental rights, representation, and equity in southern Nevada and beyond.
I also know that since the fall of Roe v. Wade, which protected a woman’s right to choose nationwide, women’s freedoms are under attack like never before. Anti-choice extremists have introduced legislation for a national abortion ban and now they’re threatening access to IVF and contraception. As someone who suffered with infertility for years, I have my two beautiful children because of IVF. I understand how tough reproductive health care decisions can be. That’s how I know that no politician should get between a woman and her doctor.
Protecting A Woman’s Freedom to Make Private Health Care Decisions
Without the protections of Roe v. Wade, even states like Nevada live under threat of a national abortion ban and reproductive freedom is under constant threat. That’s why I’m championing legislation to help women who are fleeing anti-choice states to connect with the care providers they need, protecting access to birth control, and codifying the protections of Roe v. Wade. I won’t rest until every woman has the freedom to make private reproductive and health care decisions about her own body.
Defending the Right to Start or Grow a Family Through IVF
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is how millions of parents have started or grown their family. I know how difficult this process can be because IVF gave me my family. The truth is that infertility is an illness – one that I struggled with for a long time – but IVF is the treatment. That’s why I support the Access to Family Building Act, which would establish a legal right to IVF and other assisted reproductive services for families just like mine.
Demanding Equal Pay for Equal Work
Generations of women have fought for their rights in the workplace and finally closing the wage gap that has been present for all of our history is critical. That’s why I was a proud cosponsor of the Paycheck Fairness Act that passed the House in April 2021 to eliminate wage discrimination and force transparency about salary disparities. I also helped pass the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act to put forth explicit, unwavering rights for pregnant workers and support women’s ability to work and start a family.
