Public Safety & Law Enforcement
Law enforcement officers put their lives on the line to protect our communities. They deserve the respect and resources they need to do their jobs. To help keep southern Nevadans safe, I’ve secured funding for our state and local police every appropriations cycle through robust funding for Byrne JAG formula grants, COPS Hiring grants, and Community Project Funding for state and local law enforcement activities. Recent funding includes:
- $924 million for Byrne JAG program, the leading source of federal funding for local law enforcement.
- $664.5 million for Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) hiring grants.
- $50 million for Community Violence Intervention and Prevention.
- $117 million for Second Chance Act programs.
- $713 million for Violence Against Women Act grants.
- Support for DOJ evidence-based grant programs that assist law enforcement in addressing the opioid crisis, eliminating the rape kit backlog, combatting child exploitation, and stopping school violence.
- Expanding law enforcement efforts to combat human trafficking, including a focus on rural communities.
- Increasing the DEA’s funding to expand its efforts to combat fentanyl.
Most recently, I also secured funding for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department to procure a brand new emergency vehicle, which will equip on-scene commanders and negotiators with what they need to respond to emergencies and better protect the community.
I'm committed to supporting these four main areas:
Funding the Police
In addition to the $4.5 billion of funding above, I’m also a proud supporter of the bipartisan Invest to Protect Act, which will make investments in our local law enforcement — in training, recruitment and retention, and mental health. The bipartisan legislation has been endorsed by the Nevada Association of Public Safety Officers, the Fraternal Order of Police, National Association of Police Organizations, National Sheriffs' Association, and the National Troopers Coalition.
Ending Human Trafficking and Protecting Survivors
Nevada has one of the highest rates of human trafficking in the nation. I’ve led legislation to help the Justice Department combat it in southern Nevada and abroad as well as legislation to partner the TSA with advocacy organizations to deliver safe air travel and critical care for human trafficking survivors. The bipartisan REPORT Act, which I led, was signed into law to crack down on online child abuse and trafficking.
Combating Organized Retail Crime
Organized Retail Crime is devastating businesses big and small across the country. It’s bad for business, bad for consumers, bad for taxpayers, and bad for our public safety. My bipartisan bill combines expertise from federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies along with retail industry representatives to create a cohesive national strategy to curb Organized Retail Crime.
Fighting our Fentanyl Epidemic
Fentanyl is a life or death issue – not a Republican or Democratic one. I’ve called on the Biden Administration to crack down on China’s role in illicit fentanyl production while fighting for legislation in Congress to fund smart border security measures that stop the flow of lethal fentanyl into our communities and save lives.
