Students & Education

As a product of the public education system, I put myself through college with a combination of part-time jobs, scholarships, and loans. Before coming to Congress, I spent more than two decades working with Nevada schools to support students, prevent dropouts, and strengthen our public education system. As a lifelong education advocate, I know that education is the key to opportunity.

Fully Funding Schools

I introduced legislation to fully fund Title I and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. This will provide school districts across the country, including Clark County, with the resources they need to strengthen opportunities for all students — regardless of the extra needs they have or what zip code they live in.

Supporting Students Beyond the Classroom

I understand that the success of our children goes well beyond the classroom, which is why I’m fighting to expand after-school services like medical, mental, and nutrition health services, mentoring and youth development programs, technical assistance, and continuing education courses. I’ve also introduced legislation to help future teachers start their careers while getting more students the targeted assistance they need via one-on-one and small group tutoring.

Making Higher Education More Affordable

My bipartisan Earn to Learn Act would establish a matched-savings program to help low-income students and adult learners pay for tuition, books, fees, and other education-related expenses. I’ve also introduced the Pell Grant Sustainability Act to ensure the Pell Grants' value keeps pace with costs.
