News 3: Congresswoman Susie Lee secures $1 million for new police emergency command vehicle

June 1, 2024

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department will be getting federal funding to help respond to large-scale emergencies.

Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03) announced that she secured a $1 million federal investment for LVMPD to replace the department's 17-year-old emergency command vehicle.

LVMPD's Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team is one of the best and busiest in the country, having responded to over 540 emergency incidents over the past five years.

According to officials, their current emergency command vehicle is outdated and has been deteriorating since it was first purchased in 2007. It has been used over 2,000 times, including during the aftermath of the Oct. 1, 2017, shooting and last year's deadly shooting at UNLV.

The new, non-armored vehicle will provide first responders with the latest in technology to respond to a wide array of emergencies while serving as a crucial command center and control platform to coordinate LVMPD responses to large-scale emergencies.

"Our law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day, and it's my job to support those efforts by securing the funding and resources needed to keep themselves and all of us safe," said Congresswoman Lee.

During Friday's announcement, Congresswoman Lee was joined by Deputy Chief Dori Koren, Chief of the Homeland Security Division, and Brian Peterson, Director of SWAT and K-9 operations.
