Congresswoman Lee Announces $2 Million for RTC’s Smart Traffic Optimization Project in Southern Nevada

March 23, 2023

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03) announced that the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Southern Nevada will receive $2 million from a new grant funded by the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to support smart traffic optimization.

"Nevada is beginning to feel the effects of the largest investment in our nation's infrastructure in a generation," said Congresswoman Susie Lee. "As Vice-Chair of the Problem Solvers Caucus, I can say with confidence that this funding is the gold standard for what Congress can accomplish when we work together. I look forward to RTC of Southern Nevada putting this crucial funding to good use so that our roads can become safer and more efficient for every Nevadan behind the wheel."

"The RTC is committed to engaging in innovative ways to improve transportation efficiency and safety on our roadways," said RTC CEO M.J. Maynard. "This funding secured by Congresswoman Lee and the entire Nevada delegation will allow us to prototype a smart traffic signal program that will support improved emergency vehicle response times, faster transit service, and enhanced safety on our roads through artificial intelligence. We thank our federal delegation for their continued support of these crucial transportation projects that will enhance the quality of life for Southern Nevada residents and visitors."

Provided through the new Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) Grants Program, this funding will invest in a cloud-based signal timing optimization system that supports emergency vehicle preemption, transit signal priority, and AI analytics in the Las Vegas region. The announcement comes as part of a first round of SMART Grants awarded, totaling over $94 million for 59 projects across the country.

Congresswoman Lee voted to make this funding a reality as part of the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act – legislation that she helped to craft as a member of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus.
