Congresswoman Lee Announces $2.1 Million in Joint Award to UNLV and Fresno State for STEM Workforce Training
WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03) announced that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded $2.1 million to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), in partnership with California State University, Fresno (Fresno State), for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) workforce training with a focus on environmental management.
“Southern Nevada is the entertainment capital of the world and an incredible place to raise a family or start a business. With this funding, we’re a step closer to becoming a top destination for innovation and technology,” said Congresswoman Lee. “As a lifelong education advocate, I know how important it is to give our kids opportunities that will lead to lifelong career success in high-demand industries. I was proud to fight for this funding on the House Appropriations Committee, and I’m committed to ensuring leading institutions like UNLV have the resources they need to give southern Nevadans the futures they deserve.”
DOE provided a total of seven of these grants to Minority Serving Institutions as part of the Minority Serving Institutions Partnership Program (MSIPP). This $2,131,593 award will allow UNLV to provide enhanced STEM education programs and workforce development focusing on soil and groundwater remediation. The award will also aid in promoting future careers for underrepresented groups in southern Nevada and across the country.
