WASHINGTON – Today, at the intersection of Souther Durango and West Sahara, one of the worst intersections for crashes in Vegas, Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03) announced a new $3.3 million federal investment she secured for the City of Las Vegas to install upgraded streetlights, and for the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) to install video mirrors on public transportation.
The City of Las Vegas will receive $2.5 million to install over 3,500 upgraded LED streetlights, and RTC will receive $850,000 to install video mirrors on 425 fixed-route transit vehicles. South Durango and West Sahara is one of many intersections selected for upgraded streetlight and hosts four RTC transit stops.
In 2023, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) responded to nearly 19,000 collisions across Las Vegas that included pedestrian, motorcycle, and impairment fatalities. 61 percent of all serious pedestrian injuries and fatalities occur on dimly lit roads.
At the press conference, Congresswoman Lee presented Director of Public Works from the City of Las Vegas Joey Paskey and RTC Deputy CEO Angela Castro with a check that includes:
- $2,500,000 for the City of Las Vegas to install over 3,500 upgraded LED streetlights to improve visibility and safety for all modes of transportation along several of Las Vegas’s High Injury Network corridors.
- $850,000 for RTC to install video mirrors on 425 fixed-route transit vehicles, like buses, in place of traditional mirrors. These video mirrors eliminate the blind spots, glare, and distortion that traditional mirrors cause.
“Whether you’re driving to work, biking with your kids, or walking to the store, every southern Nevadan deserves to feel safe on our roads and sidewalks. But many of our roads have become the tragic site for far too many deadly crashes,” said Congresswoman Susie Lee. “That’s why I got to work and secured federal investments to make long overdue upgrades to our streets and public transit to save lives.”
“This funding will be used to upgrade over 3,500 streetlights along a number of our High Injury Network corridors where traffic fatalities and serious injuries are heavily concentrated, all while improving community safety and lessening the City’s environmental footprint,” said Director of Public Works from the City of Las Vegas Joey Paskey. “We are thankful to Congresswoman Susie Lee and the Nevada delegation for making these critical improvements possible.”
“RTC Deputy Chief Executive Officer Angela Castro “Safety remains the RTC’s highest priority, and these two initiatives will enhance the safety of transit customers, bus operators, cyclists and pedestrians throughout the valley,” said Angela Castro, RTC Deputy CEO. “We are incredibly grateful to Congresswoman Susie Lee and Nevada’s federal delegation for securing critically needed investments for these projects that will impact hundreds of thousands daily.”
Congresswoman Lee was joined by representatives from the City of Las Vegas, RTC, and LVMPD Deputy Chief Christopher Holmes.
