Sole Southern Nevadan on Committee

WASHINGTON – With new U.S. House of Representatives committee assignments released for the 119th Congress, Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03) has solidified her position as southern Nevada’s only member of Congress on the powerful House Appropriations Committee, the legislative body responsible for distributing all federal investments across the nation.

Specifically, Lee was appointed to two critical House Appropriations subcommittees for southern Nevada: the Subcommittee on Defense and the Subcommittee on Energy & Water.

  • The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense is responsible for funding the entire United States military, including Nellis and Creech Air Force Bases and Naval Air Station Fallon. This work includes efforts to increase servicemember pay and military family benefits, spur U.S. military innovation and modernization, and maintain our competitive edge against America’s adversaries. It is also a critical opportunity for boosting and diversifying southern Nevada’s economy through local defense contractors, which create good-paying jobs.

  • The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy & Water is responsible for funding domestic water infrastructure projects as well as the Department of Energy, allowing Lee to continue her work protecting southern Nevada’s water and leading the charge to build a clean energy economy. This includes opportunities to strengthen the Las Vegas Wash and Lake Mead, support Nevada’s booming solar and geothermal industries, and invest in critical infrastructure projects through the Bureau of Reclamation and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It also the subcommittee through which Lee will continue to block funding for Yucca Mountain so Nevada does not become the nation’s nuclear dumping ground.

Each new Congress, committee assignments are determined by House leadership. The majority party determines the number of seats on each committee for both Republicans and Democrats, then leadership from each party distributes assignments to members of Congress.

In addition to her committee assignments, Lee was also elected by House Democrats as their Battleground Leadership Representative for the 119th Congress, giving her a seat at the leadership table within the House Democratic Caucus as a voice for some of the most competitive districts in the country.
