LAS VEGAS – Today, at the West Flamingo Senior Center, Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03) joined issue experts and law enforcement to host a scam prevention presentation to help keep southern Nevada seniors safe from financial scams. Lee also took questions from seniors. Nevada has the highest rate of financial fraud per capita in the nation.

With reported changes, staff layoffs, and cuts at the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the closing of a Vegas Social Security office, uncertainty and confusion has opened the door for scammers. In 2024, older adults lost a record $12.5 billion through scams and fraud, up 25 percent from $10 billion in 2023. More than 480,000 Nevada seniors receive Social Security.

Information on how seniors can protect themselves against financial scams can be found HERE.

“Unfortunately, our seniors are often the top targets of scams designed to rob them of their hard-earned savings. And it doesn’t help when this Administration has created a lot of confusion, chaos, and uncertainty surrounding Social Security,” said Congresswoman Susie Lee. “These reckless changes have made it be easier to scare seniors by suggesting that their benefits are going to be misplaced, mishandled or interrupted. More than ever, we need to provide Nevada seniors with resources to protect themselves against scammers.”

Congresswoman Lee was joined by Nevada Legal Services Director of Litigation Susan Myers, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Spring Valley Area Command Sergeant Mark Pretti, and Southern Nevada Senior Law Program Director William O. Voy, Esq.
