Congresswoman Lee-Led Bipartisan Legislation to Combat Iranian Regime’s Terror Passes House

April 16, 2024

WASHINGTON – Today, two pieces of bipartisan legislation led by Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03) passed the U.S. House of Representatives with overwhelming support. The legislation comes on the heels of Iran’s recent drone and missile attacks on Israel and their continued financial backing of terrorist groups including Hamas.

The bipartisan Solidifying Iranian Sanctions Act, which Lee co-led with Congresswoman Michelle Steel (CA-45) and House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (TX-10), would make permanent the sanctions established by the Iran Sanctions Act of 1996. Additionally, the House passed the Encouraging the EU to DESIGNATE Resolution, which urges the European Union (EU) to expeditiously designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization and encourages the Biden Administration to make that designation a diplomatic priority in engagements with the EU. Lee is an original cosponsor of the resolution.

“Iran is one of Hamas' biggest financial backers and the recent attack against Israel once again demonstrates that this terrorist regime is a threat to the Middle East and global stability overall," said Congresswoman Lee. “Regardless of political party, Congress must stand firm against the Iranian regime's brutal repression of its own people, its funding of global terrorism, and its reckless pursuit of nuclear weapons. I’m proud that our bipartisan legislation has broken through partisan gridlock at a crucial moment in the fight against terror.”

“The Iranian Regime poses one of the greatest threats to peace throughout the Middle East and the world,” said Congresswoman Steel. “There should be no sunset date to stopping funding for Iran-backed terrorism throughout the world. The Solidify Iran Sanctions Act does what it says – solidifies those sanctions – making them permanent. The people of Israel, American soldiers, and innocent people throughout the Middle East should not live in fear of the Iranian Regime and their terror.”
