Congresswoman Lee Responds to the President’s 2023 State of the Union Address
WASHINGTON — Today, Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03) released the following statement in response to President Biden's State of the Union Address:
"Tonight, President Biden delivered his first State of the Union address under a Republican House majority, but his message of unity and getting the job done persevered. The President's record has been clear: progress, possibility, and results for the American people over divided politics as usual. This past Congress, under President Biden's leadership, we did just that by passing several significant bipartisan bills, including the PACT Act to take care of our veterans, the CHIPS and Science Act to bring manufacturing home, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to invest in every corner of this country, and the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act to keep our families safe from gun violence. With the President's recommitment to his Unity Agenda — an agenda made up of popular issues that the vast majority of Americans support — I am confident that the state of our union is strong.
"Now, it's time to keep up the hard work and finish the job to ensure no one is left behind - and we're on the right track. With the Inflation Reduction Act, we're already lowering health care and energy costs for American families. And with the President's economic leadership, 12 million jobs were created, and unemployment is at a 50-year low. Now, with a Republican House, the call to work together echoes louder than ever, and I am looking forward to this President leading common-sense efforts to bring our parties together and strengthen our economy for all working families.
"Bipartisanship is key, but at the same time our values cannot waver. This was the President's first State of the Union Address since the Supreme Court's devastating decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Today, it's being met with extreme legislation from this Republican House majority that would further decimate a woman's right to choose, impose federal restrictions, and even ban abortion nationwide. I am glad that the President's commitment in this fight did not waver and I look forward to continuing to carry this fight here in Congress."
