Congresswoman Lee Responds to the President’s 2024 State of the Union Address

March 8, 2024

WASHINGTON — Today, Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03) released the following statement in response to President Biden’s State of the Union Address:

“Tonight, at a time of unprecedented threats to democracy, both domestic and foreign, President Biden delivered a strong address outlining a path forward for our country. The President reaffirmed his commitment to defending democracy at home and abroad.

“And he presented Congress with a choice — that we can continue to improve our economy and people’s lives through bipartisanship or score partisan political points by blocking key legislation, like the border security and national security package, which would make us all less safe and secure.

“The President has led this country out of a pandemic and guided Congress in passing historic bipartisan legislation that has positively impacted the lives of Nevadans. This past Congress, Democrats and Republicans worked together to pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to fix Nevada’s crumbling infrastructure and create millions of jobs, the PACT Act to take care of our veterans, the CHIPS and Science Act to bring manufacturing home, and historic gun and school safety legislation to keep our families safe. And we passed the Inflation Reduction Act to lower health care, prescription drug, and energy costs, create jobs in southern Nevada, and deliver the largest climate investment in our nation’s history.

“And, as a result, thousands of Nevadans have seen increased wages, inflation has come down, and jobs are plentiful. But our work is not finished. First, we must continue to reduce costs for our working families and ensure that billionaires pay their fair share. We must continue to fight to expand the Child Tax Credit, and as the President said, we must continue to invest in early childhood education and high-quality tutoring. That's why I recently introduced the bipartisan PATHS to Tutor Act to expand access to tutoring for our students.

“Second, to address immigration, Republican leadership must let us vote on bipartisan legislation to protect our border and create a path to citizenship.

“Lastly, I was proud that the President made clear that we won’t stop fighting until women have the freedom to make their own reproductive and healthcare decisions.

“The way to move Nevada and America forward is through real problem-solving.”
