Congresswoman Lee Slams Attempts to Privatize Social Security on its 90th Anniversary

August 14, 2025

LAS VEGAS, NV – Today, Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03) released the following statement on the 90th Anniversary of the Social Security Act being signed into law.

“Social Security was passed 90 years ago to ensure that no senior or person with disabilities would live in poverty. It’s a commitment that Americans pay into during their working lives — a commitment we must honor.

“By firing staff and gutting Social Security, Republicans in Washington are paving the way to privatizing it.

“I will continue to fight to ensure we honor our obligation to those who rely on this lifeline.”

As of December 2024, 142,786 residents of Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District received Social Security benefits. That includes:

·         114,472 retired workers

·         11,203 disabled workers

·         6,975 widow(er)s and parents

·         3,674 spouses

·         6,462 children

Since January, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has faced a number of threats to its viability. Approximately 7,000 workers have been cut — the largest staffing cut in SSA’s history, which may result in service delays.

Additionally, in Las Vegas, the Trump Administration put a Social Security office on the chopping block while floating plans to end phone service for millions of Americans filing retirement and disability claims, a proposal they later scrapped after public outcry.

Congresswoman Lee has stood up to attacks on Social Security and worked to ensure Nevadans receive their hard-earned benefits. Last month, she hosted a townhall with Martin O’Malley, former Commissioner of the Social Security Administration, to answer constituents’ questions about how recent policies in Washington could impact their benefits. In April, Lee also hosted a Senior Scam Protection event providing seniors with tips to safeguard their Social Security benefits.
