Congresswoman Lee Slams Trump Administration for Cutting Off SNAP Benefits as Court Rules the Administration’s Withholding of SNAP Funds Illegal

October 31, 2025

Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03) released the following statement today after Judge John J. McConnell, of the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island, ruled that the Trump administration must use over $5 billion in Congressionally appropriated emergency funds for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to ensure SNAP recipients continue receiving benefits during the Republican-led government shutdown.

“Blocking food from reaching hungry Americans is just another illegal action that this Administration has taken. As I said before, Republicans in power who stood by and said nothing are complicit,” said Congresswoman Susie Lee. “The Trump Administration is using hunger as a weapon. They are deliberately withholding emergency funds that would keep American kids fed. There is simply no excuse.”

Earlier this week, Congresswoman Lee raised the alarm that the Trump Administration was cruelly withholding emergency funds for SNAP after the Department of Agriculture announced that no food aid would go out November 1st, despite the SNAP emergency fund having more than $5 billion ready to use.

Lee previously sent a letter to Governor Lombardo alongside her fellow Nevada Congressional Democrats, Reps. Horsford (NV-04) and Titus (NV-01), urging the governor to do everything within his power, including calling for a Special Session of the Legislature, to protect SNAP recipients.
