Congresswoman Lee Statement Against Speaker Johnson’s Dangerous Attempt to Restrict Voting Rights for Millions of U.S. Citizens
WASHINGTON — Today, Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03) released the following statement after voting against a government funding bill that included dangerous provisions to restrict voting access for millions of U.S. citizens:
“The American people deserve to have a Speaker who will not waste precious time and bring this government to the brink of a shutdown in order to score cheap political points. Instead of bringing a long-term spending package to the floor, the Speaker is bringing a package to the floor that has no chance of being signed into law.
“I’ve repeatedly supported legislation to prevent noncitizens from voting. The SAVE Act is not that. Instead, it would gut mail and online voter registration for Americans and put millions of U.S. citizens at risk of having their names erroneously removed from state voter rolls. Under the SAVE Act, birth certificates for U.S. citizens who have changed their names, like married women, military IDs for servicemembers and their families, and tribal IDs would not be considered proof of citizenship to vote.
“By attaching the SAVE Act to the government funding bill, Speaker Johnson is pushing our country one step closer to a government shutdown. This is an avoidable shutdown that would endanger our national security, send Nevada’s economy into a tailspin, and threaten Meals on Wheels for seniors, benefits for veterans, pay for servicemembers and TSA workers, and much more.
“It’s time for Speaker Johnson to work with both parties on a bipartisan solution to keep the government running because our families, military, and economy depend on it.”
