Congresswoman Lee Statement on Local Pharmacies Beginning to Dispense Mifepristone in Nevada
Supreme Court Decision Could Still Threaten Access to Abortion Pill
LAS VEGAS – Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03) released the following statement applauding the recent announcement that local chain pharmacies in Nevada have begun carrying mifepristone, the safe and effective abortion pill and the most commonly used means of abortion nationwide:
“Nevadans have made clear for decades that they believe a woman has the right to make decisions about her own body. But that sentiment means nothing if women don’t actually have access to the reproductive care they need.
“I’m proud to have fought to expand access to critical care like mifepristone and I’m relieved to see that our local pharmacies have made the right decision to carry this pill that was approved by the FDA in 2000 and has been used safely for twenty years.
“Unfortunately, anti-choice extremists here in Nevada and across the country are hellbent on implementing a nationwide abortion ban. I won’t rest until every woman has the freedom and the resources to make her own healthcare choices.”
The decision by chain pharmacies to begin dispensing mifepristone comes ahead of a Supreme Court decision that could potentially block decades-long access to the pill nationwide, regardless of state laws. Congresswoman Lee joined an amicus brief for this case earlier this year arguing in favor of protecting mifepristone.
