Congresswoman Lee Statement on Longest Government Shutdown in American History

November 5, 2025

Today, Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03) released the following statement as the ongoing federal government shutdown surpassed the record for longest shutdown in American history:

“Today, the ongoing federal government shutdown became the longest in American history.

“This shameful milestone is purely a result of congressional Republicans’ and President Trump’s refusal to work in good faith to protect health care for the American people. Rather than finding a bipartisan path forward, President Trump has been tweeting about his new marble bathroom, sending $20 billion in taxpayer dollars to his buddies in Argentina, and building a $250 million-dollar White House ballroom. Meanwhile, Speaker Johnson hasn’t allowed the House to vote in 47 days.

“Throughout this shutdown, we’ve seen the Trump Administration and Republicans in Congress continue their assault on hardworking Americans. From firing federal workers to illegally withholding SNAP benefits from millions of hungry families, Republicans in Washington have shown that they’re more interested in hurting innocent Americans to make a political point than actually passing policies to make their lives easier.

“As I have said since the moment this shutdown started, I’m ready to work with anyone on commonsense legislation to open the government, protect health care, and lower costs for hardworking Americans.”
