WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Susie Lee (NV-03) released the following statement after voting to pass the Protecting Our Kids Act (H.R. 7910), a package of seven provisions that would help to curb gun violence in America.

"Nearly five years ago, on October 1, 2017, Las Vegas became the site of our country's deadliest mass shooting when 60 people were shot and killed and hundreds more were wounded at a concert on the Strip," said Rep. Susie Lee. "We know all too well the pain that cities like Uvalde, Buffalo and Tulsa have faced in recent weeks. Americans no longer feel safe going to concerts, to grocery stores, to movie theaters, to houses of worship, and our kids and teachers don't feel safe going to school. Every day in this country, 110 people die from gun violence. Enough is enough – it's time to stop the bloodshed. This week, I was proud to vote to pass the Protecting Our Kids Act. This common-sense legislation will help to curb gun violence by raising the purchase age for semi-automatic weapons to 21, outlawing high-capacity magazines that make mass shootings more deadly, cracking down on gun trafficking, and strengthening safe storage requirements."

The Protecting Our Kids Act will help curb gun violence by:

  • Raising the lawful age to purchase a semiautomatic centerfire rifle from 18 to 21 years old
  • Establishing a new federal offense for the import, sale, manufacture, transfer, or possession of a large capacity magazines, with exceptions for certain law enforcement uses and the possession (but not sale) of grandfathered magazines;
  • Establishing new federal offenses for gun trafficking and straw purchasers and authorize seizure of the property and proceeds of the offense
  • Establishing voluntary best practices for safe firearm storage; award grants for Safe Firearm Storage Assistance Programs; provide a tax incentive to dealers for 10% of amounts received from the sale of safe storage devices
  • Establishing requirements to regulate the storage of firearms on residential premises; create criminal penalties for violation of the requirements
  • Building on ATF's regulatory bump stock ban by listing bump stocks under the National Firearms Act (like machine guns) and statutorily banning the manufacture, sale, or possession of bump stocks for civilian use
  • Building on ATF's regulatory ban of ghost guns by ensuring that ghost guns are subject to existing federal firearm regulation by amending the definition of "firearm" to include gun kits and partial receivers and changing the definition of "manufacturing firearms" to include assembling firearms using 3D printing
