LAS VEGAS, NV – Last week, Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03) shared the story of Katie, a social worker and single mom from Las Vegas, who depends on the ACA Premium Tax Credits to afford health care for herself and her almost-four-year-old.

“Hi, I’m Katie. I’m a social worker here in Las Vegas, and more importantly, I’m a single mom to an almost-four-year-old. As a 1099 contractor, I buy us health insurance through the Nevada Health Link. Without the Enhanced Premium Tax Credits, my monthly premium would be nearly $600. But with the EPTC, or as we know it here in Nevada, APTC, I’m only paying about $85 a month. That’s over $500 in savings: money that goes to food, daycare, and keeping a roof over our heads. With housing and grocery costs skyrocketing, every dollar matters,” said Katie.

Katie continued, “Here’s the scary part: Right now, there’s a fight in Congress over whether or not to extend these Enhanced Premium Tax Credits. Additionally, insurance companies are requesting an average of 20% increase for monthly premiums. Without the EPTCs, I’m looking at nearly $700 a month just for the premium. And I’m not alone. This has been one of the biggest investments in American history for working families. We can’t afford to lose it. We need to demand that Congress act now, because families like mine are worth fighting for.”

Congresswoman Lee has continued to sound the alarm on the health care crisis facing Nevada since Republicans in Washington took away tax credits that 30,000 southern Nevadans like Katie depend on to afford their health insurance. Without these credits, costs for families could rise by nearly 200%.
