Rep. Lee Announces Nearly $1.25 Million Community Policing Development Grant
WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Rep. Susie Lee (Nev.-03) announced that the Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) has awarded the Nevada System of Higher Education $1,249,964 in Community Policing Development (CPD) funding to make the University Police Department, which serves Nevada's state-funded university system, the National De-escalation Training Center in the western region. The City of North Las Vegas also received $162,900 in CPD funding.
"It is essential that our local law enforcement has the resources to develop and grow so that our police officers can continue to protect our communities," said Rep. Lee. "This funding will make Nevada an authority in de-escalation training and ensure that law enforcement entities across the west can create comprehensive approaches to prevent crime. I am proud to announce this grant, and I know that Nevada's law enforcement system will continue to be a leading example for the country in keeping our communities safe."
"Community policing is vital to effective law enforcement and in strengthening relationships between police and the citizens they serve," said Rick McCann, Executive Director of the Nevada Association of Public Safety Officers. "Training on crisis intervention, de-escalation techniques involving potential uses of force, and diversity awareness are at the forefront of effective police reform and we look forward to receiving this important training thanks to the efforts of Congresswoman Lee to secure the necessary funding."
"We thank Congresswoman Lee for her advocacy and support in securing funding for NSHE University Police Services to improve training activities through a regional National De-escalation Training Center," said Chancellor Melody Rose. "As a minority-majority public higher education system, it is important our law enforcement officers are equipped with the necessary training and techniques to ensure best practices are utilized during every public encounter".
