Rep. Lee, Congress Certify 2020 Election After Failed Violent Extremist Insurrection at Capitol

January 7, 2021

Washington, D.C. – In the wake of violent extremists storming and attacking the Capitol building, Congress certified the 2020 Electoral College Results that determined Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as the next President and Vice President of the United States.

Rep. Susie Lee (Nev.-03) released the following statement:

"We will never forget this day. Violent extremists, fueled by the dangerous rhetoric of public officials and conspiracy peddlers, attempted to overthrow our most hallowed democratic institution. But the moments that followed their failed, thuggish insurrection showed the unbreakable resolve of American democracy.

"Today, we fulfilled our duty and certified the 2020 Electoral College results that determined Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as the next President and Vice President of the United States. It's a shame that it took violence and bloodshed for some—but sadly not all—of my colleagues to rethink their reckless, baseless attempts to undermine faith in our elections. But the American people have spoken. Nevadans have spoken. Joe Biden is our next President.

"Public officials, including President Trump, must be held responsible not only for inciting violence with their dangerous rhetoric, but for wasting Americans' time and money with this political theater while Congress should be focused on crushing the pandemic and distributing the COVID-19 vaccine.

"This is a sobering moment for our country, one we should not forget. But we fulfilled our duty to the American people by certifying the 2020 election. Now we can get back to the work they sent us here to do."
