Rep. Lee Statement on Federal Court Decision Against Nevada in Case Regarding U.S. Government’s Secret Plutonium Shipment to State in January 2019

August 14, 2019

Las Vegas, Nev. - Rep. Susie Lee (Nev.-03) released the following statement after the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against Nevada in their case with the United States federal government regarding the Department of Energy's secret weapons-grade plutonium shipment to the state in January 2019:

"The court's decision yesterday does not change the fact that the Department of Energy's decision to secretly ship weapons-grade plutonium to our state was completely devoid of any concern for the health and safety of every Nevadan. DOE's continued carelessness is exactly the concern of every Nevadan who is told that we should welcome the storage of nuclear waste in our backyard. Nevada families should not have to live near dangerous nuclear material, not to mention the irreparable damage to our residents, visitors and economy that would result from an accident. DOE must remove this dangerous material from our state as soon as possible, and I will hold them to their promise that they will no longer ship dangerous radioactive material to Nevada."
