Rep. Lee Statement on Vote for Stop Insider Trading Act

Today, Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03) released the following statement on her vote for the Stop Insider Trading Act:

“My constituents demand politicians be held to high standards, as I have held myself to throughout my career. Decades of inaction by both parties to prevent elected officials from profiting off their positions is totally unacceptable. 

“Today, I voted for the Stop Insider Trading Act – which prevents Members of Congress from purchasing stock and puts restrictions on their ability to sell stock. While it doesn’t address the President and Vice President — and isn’t as powerful as legislation I support, like the Restore Trust in Government Act — it is a step in the right direction. 

“This bill also cynically includes onerous voter ID requirements. 

“Let me be clear: I support voter ID measures, including Nevada’s Question 7 ballot initiative, which 73% of Nevadans voted to pass last election. At the same time, by requiring voters to make and include photocopies of their IDs when returning their mail-in ballots — or forcing them to track down a notary — Republicans in Congress are deliberately threatening a voting method that millions of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents use to make their voices heard. I believe elections should be regulated by the states, first and foremost, as prescribed by the Constitution, and I prefer Nevada’s approach. 

“As is nearly always the case, I have to vote on the legislation in front of me, not the legislation I wish I had. I’ll continue fighting to ensure all eligible voters can exercise their right to vote and have their vote counted.”
