Rep. Susie Lee Helps Pass Bill to Prevent Junk Health Insurance Plans and Protect Americans With Pre-Existing Conditions

May 9, 2019

Washington, DC—Today, Rep. Susie Lee (NV-03) voted to pass H.R. 986, the Protecting Americans With Pre-Existing Conditions Act, which will prevent further attacks by the Trump Administration on the Affordable Care Act from taking away protections from patients with pre-existing conditions. This bill will reverse the administration's rule that allowed states to create their own health insurance rules as long as they can show the rules would increase access, regardless of affordability or quality of coverage. The short-term, high-deductible, low-coverage junk plans allowed by this rule could increase prices for millions of Americans, especially those with pre-existing conditions.

"People with pre-existing conditions need affordable, dependable health insurance, and the junk insurance allowed by the Administration's waiver rule does just the opposite," said Rep. Susie Lee (NV-03). "This rule would only lead to more expensive, less dependable health coverage, which is not the kind of access that people need or want. The American people have made it clear: protections for pre-existing conditions under the Affordable Care Act are working, and Congress needs to fight back against any and all attempts to dismantle these protections--that's exactly what I will continue to do."
