Rep. Susie Lee Helps Pass Landmark Legislation to Strengthen Domestic and Sexual Violence Protections for Women

March 16, 2021

WASHINGTON – T0day, U.S. Rep. Susie Lee (Nev.-03) voted to pass the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act (VAWA) of 2021. This bill would renew the Violence Against Women Act of 1994, which had been continuously reauthorized with broad, bipartisan support up until the 2018 government shutdown. The new bill builds upon previous versions of VAWA by making investments in preventing domestic and sexual violence and providing critical funding to programs supporting survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking.

"The protection of women and children isn't a partisan issue — it's a moral issue. VAWA has been instrumental in directing the national response against sexual assault and domestic violence, which is why it's shameful that we've allowed it to expire for this long," said Rep. Lee. "This past year has only demonstrated the continued need for VAWA as we saw a sharp increase in intimate partner violence. I am proud to pass the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act, and I hope that my Senate colleagues will do their part to ensure that every survivor receives the resources they need to lead a life free from fear and violence."
