Rep. Susie Lee Helps Pass Two Bipartisan Gun Safety Bills to Strengthen our Background Checks System
WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Susie Lee (Nev.-03) released the following statement after voting to pass two gun safety bills which would strengthen our background checks system, HR 8 and HR 1446.
"Nevadans know the horror of gun violence all too well. I will always fight for common-sense measures to keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them. Background checks work. They save lives, and the vast majority of Americans support them. But sadly, many states do not require this common-sense measure, leading to thousands of guns sold every year with no background check and no questions asked.
"And, even when there is a background check, too often, guns are sold before the completion of a background check due to the ‘default proceed' process – a loophole known as the Charleston loophole. Today, I was proud to vote to strengthen our background checks system by passing background checks on all gun sales and legislation to close the Charleston loophole."
