Las Vegas, Nev. – U.S. Rep. Susie Lee (Nev.-03) hosted a Facebook Live event yesterday afternoon with Rebecca Garcia, president of the Nevada Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and an administrator of the Clark County School District (CCSD) Parents Facebook page, and Felicia Ortiz, the State Board of Education member for Congressional District 3, to give CCSD parents the opportunity to ask questions and share thoughts on how the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is impacting CCSD families across Southern Nevada.
"COVID-19 has drastically changed our day-to-day lives, especially when it comes to how we educate our students," said Rep. Lee. "In a school system that was already stretched to provide quality education to all students, this crisis has illuminated the inequity of resources. It's times like these that move us to innovate, collaborate and improvise. I'm so encouraged by the tireless work of our CCSD educators and community partners, like PBS, who are finding creative ways to connect with students. They understand that, as unprecedented as this public health crisis is, we still need to make sure our students are not just engaging and learning, but still have access to food, supplies, and other important services that many CCSD students rely on.
"Congress passed over $30 billion for emergency support to our local schools and education system, and Governor Sisolak has enacted important state relief funding for our schools as well," Rep. Lee continued. "This is helping CCSD continue to teach our kids and provide vital services, but there's more work to do. We need to ensure that students and families without devices or reliable internet access can access learning and services, and the relief funding that has been allocated for education is being implemented as quickly and effectively as possible. CCSD is the fifth largest school district in the country, and it's our duty to make sure every single student is getting the education and help they need during these unprecedented times."
BACKGROUND: Congress has passed three COVID-19 relief packages, including the bipartisan Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, a comprehensive $2 trillion relief package to help families, workers, and small businesses. The CARES Act includes $30.75 billion for grants to provide emergency support to local school systems and higher education institutions to continue to provide educational services to their students and support the on-going functionality of school districts and institutions.
