Rep. Susie Lee Hosts Town Hall at Affordable Housing Community for Seniors, Working Families

February 20, 2020

Henderson, Nev. – U.S. Rep. Susie Lee (Nev.-03) hosted her first town hall of 2020 at Horizon Pines Apartments. The apartments are an affordable housing community operated by Nevada HAND, a non-profit organization that provides affordable housing for seniors and working families in Nevada.

"Supporting working families and seniors is one of my top priorities, which is why I wanted to host my first town hall of 2020 with Nevada HAND and hear directly from my constituents about the issues affecting their lives," said Rep. Susie Lee. "It's easy to get distracted by the partisan fighting in Washington, but it's clear from my town hall today that my constituents—whether they're Democratic, Republican, or Independent—want Congress to find solutions to the issues that really matter: lowering prescription drug and health care costs, affordable housing, education, and financial stability. That's exactly what I've done so far in Congress as the House passed my bills to reauthorize the Older Americans Act, lower prescription drug costs for Nevadans on Medicare, and protect students from predatory student loan practices. My top priority will always be finding smart, bipartisan solutions to the issues that matter for families in southern Nevada."

BACKGROUND: Highlights of Congresswoman Lee's legislative accomplishments:

  • One of seven freshman members of the House of Representatives to have a bill signed into law by the President.
  • 13 pieces of legislation passed by the House, all with bipartisan support.
  • Prevented a pay raise for Members of Congress.
  • 18 bills introduced, 10 of which she introduced with bipartisan support.
  • In September 2019, the House of Representatives passed Rep. Lee's bill, the Dignity in Aging Act, to reauthorize and strengthen the Older Americans Act (OAA). The OAA is the primary legislation that covers social and nutrition services for older Americans and their caregivers.
    • The Dignity in Aging Act responds to the challenges facing a growing generation of aging Americans by providing a 35 percent total increase in program funding for OAA over five years.
    • Included as a provision in the Dignity in Aging Act which passed the House, was Rep. Lee's bill, the Direct CARE Opportunity Act, which invests in training and employment advancement opportunities for America's direct care workers.
  • In December 2019, the House of Representatives passed HR3, the Lower Drug Costs Now Act, which would enact sweeping legislation to lower the cost of prescription drugs for millions of Americans.
    • Rep. Lee's bill, the Enhancing Retirement Security for Medicare Beneficiaries Act, passed as a provision of HR 3. This bill would guarantee that retirement savings aren't counted when determining if someone qualifies for Medicare Part D's Low Income Subsidy (LIS) program
  • In January 2020, the House of Representatives passed Rep. Lee's resolution, H.J.Res. 76, a Congressional Review Act which would overturn the U.S. Department of Education's (DOE) 2019 Borrower Defense rule that gutted essential protections for student borrowers and taxpayers.
