Rep. Susie Lee, House Pass Resolution Formally Recognizing Armenian Genocide
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Susie Lee (Nev.-03) helped pass House Resolution 296, affirming the United States record on the Armenian Genocide. The resolution reaffirms that it is U.S. policy to commemorate the Armenian genocide as the killing of 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire from 1915 to 1923, to unequivocally reject any efforts to deny the existence of the Armenian genocide, and to encourage education and public understanding about the genocide.
"To fight back against hate and discrimination, we must learn from, not erase, our history," said Rep. Lee. "There is not a shadow of a doubt that the Armenian people were subject to a brutal genocide, and it is the duty of the American government and every government to shut down false claims or denials of what the Armenian people experienced. I joined the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues to shine a light not just on this issue, but on all unique issues facing Armenian Americans in Nevada's 3rd District and throughout the country. I'm proud to help pass this resolution and will keep doing my part to ensure that the Armenian genocide is not pushed aside as a footnote of human history."
BACKGROUND: In June 2019, Rep. Susie Lee became a member of the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues to advocate for Armenian Americans in southern Nevada, including to advocate education and recognition of the Armenian genocide.
