Rep. Susie Lee Wishes Nevadans Happy Labor Day Weekend

August 30, 2019

Las Vegas, Nev. - Rep. Susie Lee (Nev.-03) released the following statement wishing a happy and restful Labor Day weekend to southern Nevada's workers and families:

"Labor Day weekend is a time to honor the men and women who have labored to make this country great. It is also a time to acknowledge every American who has fought to guarantee that the rights of all workers are protected. Labor unions have helped shape our country, strengthened the middle class, and given working families the conditions and opportunities to not just get by, but achieve the American dream. Without the labor movement, many benefits we take for granted would not exist today, such as the 40-hour work week, weekends, and workplace safety standards.

"But for many American workers, there is still much work to be done. In Congress, I am fighting for workers by supporting landmark legislation like the Raise the Wage Act and the SECURE Act, which will provide millions of Americans the ability to retire in dignity.

"Despite the progress we have made and the work that we still need to do, I wish everyone an enjoyable and pleasant holiday weekend with family and friends. Don't forget: We owe this weekend off to organized labor, too."

BACKGROUND: Rep. Lee championed and helped pass the Raise the Wage Act, which would gradually raise the federal minimum wage for the first time in a decade to $15 per hour by 2026. She helped pass bipartisan legislation to repeal the Cadillac tax, a tax on employer health plans that would hurt the middle class. She also helped pass the Butch Lewis Act to reform pension plans and establish the Pension Rehabilitation Administration, and the SECURE Act to open 401(k)s and Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) to more workers, while giving Americans more flexibility and security with their retirement plans.
