Southern Nevada Congressional Delegation, Chairman Bobby Scott Meet with Nevada Education Leaders

October 2, 2019

Las Vegas, Nev. – U.S. Rep. Susie Lee (Nev.-03), a member of the House Committee on Education and Labor, and House Education and Labor Committee Chairman Bobby Scott (Va.-03) met with local and state education leaders throughout southern Nevada today.

Rep. Lee and Chairman Scott were first joined by Rep. Dina Titus (Nev.-01), Rep. Steven Horsford (Nev.-04), Nevada Department of Education Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Jhone Ebert, and Nevada educators to discuss K-12 education reform and policies important to Nevada's students, teachers, and school system.

Afterwards, Rep. Lee and Chairman Scott delivered remarks at ‘The State of Higher Education' event hosted by Nevada State College and the Nevada System of Higher of Education, highlighting higher education, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, and policies important to minority students. Rep. Lee delivered opening remarks and Chairman Scott spoke as the keynote.

"Before I was elected to Congress, my work centered around helping people, especially helping Nevada students find opportunities to succeed," said Rep. Lee. "Something I learned early on is that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to academic success. Different students need different support to close opportunity and achievement gaps, and as a member of the House Committee on Education and Labor, I am able to translate my on-the-ground experience into concrete education policy. I'm grateful that Chairman Scott, Congresswoman Titus, and Congressman Horsford were able to join me today in gathering feedback from Nevada's students, educators, and administrators."

"I was honored to spend the day with Congresswoman Lee and meet with educators in the community," said Chairman Scott. "As a champion for students, she has been an important voice on the Education and Labor Committee as we address issues that have a major impact on families here and across the country. I look forward to working with her on our upcoming effort to pass a comprehensive reauthorization of the Higher Education Act that puts an affordable, quality college degree within reach of every American."

"As a father, I understand the importance of a supportive and nurturing school environment for the success of our children," said Rep. Horsford. "As a product of our local school system, I understand that Clark County School District students and schools need equitable support and funding. Thank you to my friend and Chairman of the Education and Labor Committee, Congressman Bobby Scott, for meeting with local educators and my colleagues in the Nevada delegation to hear about our state's unique needs."
