A Nevada congresswoman has introduced a bill that would increase the value of Pell Grants, a kind of financial aid offered to nearly half of all students in the Nevada System of Higher Education.

The Pell Grant Sustainability Act, a collaboration between Democrats Rep. Sean Casten of Illinois and Rep. Susie Lee of Nevada, would index the grants to inflation to account for rising annual costs.

At a Nevada State College event focused on minority students in higher education, Rep. Susie Lee, D-Nev., and House Education and Labor Committee Chairman Bobby Scott emphasized that a college education is still the key to opportunity.

But Scott, D-Va., said reforms are needed to restore a longstanding promise to young people that their education will be affordable.

"An entire generation of students is now questioning whether college is worth it," he said. "That is certainly a major step back."

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The man responsible for a deadly mass shooting in the Bay Area last weekend bought his gun in Nevada, according to law enforcement authorities. A total of three people were killed, and 12 others were injured in the Garlic Festival in Gilroy, California.

Police said the suspect legally purchased his gun in the state of Nevada. California Governor Gavin Newsom was quick to point out less restrictive gun laws in neighboring states after the Gilroy shooting; even calling for federal regulation. Now, there are changes in store for Nevada's gun law.

WASHINGTON — The House on Thursday overwhelmingly approved a resolution condemning bigotry and anti-Semitism, a measure seen as an indirect rebuke of statements about Israel made by Rep. Ilhan Omar that fractured the Democratic caucus and set off a furor that party leaders have struggled to contain.

The resolution was initially crafted to address statements by Omar, D-Minn., a freshman Muslim lawmaker who last week infuriated Jewish Democrats by saying pro-Israel advocates in Congress were giving their allegiance to a foreign country.

Members of Nevada's congressional delegation have continued to file legislation aimed at Yucca Mountain.

Sen. Jacky Rosen and Rep. Susie Lee, along with Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto and Reps. Mark Amodei and Steven Horsford, introduced the Jobs, Not Waste Act, which would put a hold on any action on the Yucca Mountain site.
